Planning a move is more than just making sure that things are boxed up and ready to go on the day of the move. If you have advanced notice (and you should), then there are some things that you can do prior to your move to make moving day to even smoother. Here are some things you should be planning and have done two or three months prior to your move.
Make Travel Arrangements
If you are moving very far from your current home then you will need to make travel arrangements. This could mean anything from arranging a driver for a second car to arranging air fare for a flight overseas.
Make sure to get your travel arranged well in advance of the move. You don’t want to be attempting to book last minute air fare or trying to convince a teenager in the parking lot to drive your car five hours away.
Plan to Empty Your Pantry
It’s amazing how many items can collect in a pantry over time. Do you really want to be moving a half opened box of noodles or the bottom of a jar of peanut butter? If you take the time to plan your menus well in advance of your move, then you can use up anything in your pantry that it does not make sense to take with you.
The closer you get to your move, the less you need to shop (if at all, depending on how well stocked you are). Save up your grocery funds for when you make it to your new home.
Start Packing Now
If it’s July, you probably won’t need your Christmas dress before the move. Any items that you know you won’t need before you move can be safely packed away. This helps spread out the packing process so that you aren’t scrambling at the last minute to get everything tossed into a box. Frantic packing usually means lost items in the move.
Have a Yard Sale
Now is the time to get rid of the things you don’t want to be taking with you. The people helping you move will probably not want the lamps your great aunt left to you. Go through your house and find the things that you know you aren’t going to be taking with you. Figure out if they are worth selling — or donating if you prefer. No reason to move clutter with you to a new home.
Arrange for Long Distance Moves
Many movers have a limited amount of trucks capable of doing a long distance move. If your move happens to be a long one, you want to have your movers lined up as soon as you can.
