Whether you are moving to get a bigger home for your kids or to a better neighborhood for them to grow up in, moving with children can add complexity to a move. Remember that as stressful as the move can be for you, it is probably just as stressful for your children. Moving to a new place can be intimidating for a small child. Here are some ways to keep things exciting and adventurous for them.
Let them Participate
No matter what age they are, children want to feel involved. They see you doing a flurry of work to get things ready to go and will want to help; so let them. Take a minute to assign them a task that is appropriate to their age. While they may not be able to lift anything heavy, they can help out with packing silverware or running off to fetch packing tape. Let them know that they are an important part of the move as well so they don’t feel left out of the loop. Sure, you might have to redo some of their “help,” but it will be worth it in the long run.
Keep Them Involved in the Process
Children are perceptive, so they will be able to tell that something is going on. Intentionally keeping them unaware that you are about to move can lead to their imaginations inventing something much more terrible than a simple move actually is. Talk to them and let them know what is happening. Tell them why you are moving and let them know what their new home is going to be like.
Take a Trip to the New Home
If your children weren’t involved in the selection of the new home, now is a great time to show them where they are going to be living. If the move is local or even a short drive away, then taking them on a field trip to their new home can be a great experience for them. Show them their new daycare or elementary and give them a tour of nearby parks they will soon get to play in. Get them excited about the move.
Let them Contribute
Once you get to the new home, involve the kids by giving them some freedom for their imaginations. Kids can be very creative, and they may have ideas for their new room that you had not thought of yourself. Ask them to draw a map of their new room and where they would like their bed and toy box to go. Ask them if they would like their room painted a specific color or let them pick out decals for the walls. Give them a say in the new home. You may be surprised at what they come up with.
