Sometimes you may find yourself in a position where you need to move into a temporary home for some reason. A temporary job, helping a sick relative or relocating while looking for a new permanent home can all cause you to have to pick a temporary place to stay. Here are some things to keep in mind when you are moving but don’t plan on staying very long.
How Temporary is Temporary?
The first thing you are going to need to do is find a new temporary home. Ask yourself: how long do you plan on staying? If you are only going to be on location for a few weeks, there are several furnished extended stay options that are available. They might even be affordable enough that you won’t have to move anything but your most basic essentials. If you plan on staying for months or longer, you may want to locate a small house or apartment that offers a monthly lease.
What to Take
Start with the absolute basics. What are the things that you can’t live without? Make a list of all the essentials and pack those first. Now that you have the essentials packed, you can start adding things you would like to take along until you feel that your new house will be full. Remember, if you are going to be in the north from December to March, you probably don’t need to bring those swim trunks along. Likewise, you won’t need your winter coat in July.
Plan for the Rest
Do you plan on keeping your old home as well, or are you going to be making a bigger move eventually? If you plan on moving back to your old home, can you afford to keep it as storage for your things while you are gone? If you move out of your old home, you will need some form of storage to hold your things until you return. Remember when you are planning your budgets to include the costs of a storage locker or other facility to keep the things you aren’t taking with you.
Plan Your Moving Budget
Moving your things to two different locations can be tricky. Regardless of whether you are planning to do the move yourself or have movers do the move for you, there are going to be extra costs involved in moving to two locations. Don’t short yourself on the moving budget. You need to be able to cover the costs for moving all of your things.
Keep Things Organized
You are eventually going to move to a permanent location so keep your things organized. As time passes, you don’t want to forget where items are or worse, rebuy them and have two. Make lists of what you have with you and what are in storage so you know where everything is at.
